Sauza Blue Tequila Silver - Tequila Review

Time to write about yet another delicious Tequila - Sauza Blue Tequila Silver 100% Agave.  Now back in the day, Sauza made a number of Tequilas but they were mixto Tequilas - meaning that they were only 51% actual agave.  The rest of the product could be made up of any number of ingredients, but probably the cheapest thing they could find that would ferment.  The result was a beverage that had  some agave flavor to it - but mostly was just a cheap, hard-hitting alcohol that left you with a nasty hangover in the morning, while bringing down the reputation of Tequila for everyone involved.  A lot of people have "Tequila stories" and the poor quality of Tequila that used to be available is probably a major contributing factor.

Enter the new Sauza Blue Tequila Silver.  It's made from 100% pure agave so you know you're getting a premium product.  Gone are the days of headaches, replaced now with the joy of being able to drink some of this delicious sipping tequila - or making it into a delicious margarita - and feeling pretty damn good the next day.  Life is grand, is it not?

Sauza still makes a couple of mixto offerings, probably for the college student market.  Or just for people who don't care I suppose.  These offerings are less expensive that the Sauza Blue 100% agave tequila - but I personally wouldn't bother trying them.  This bottle of Sauza Blue is an incredible value at just around $22 a bottle, so how inexpensive do you need to go?  Especially if you're getting an inferior or arguably adulterated product?  Better to spend a little bit more and get a quality product, especially when it's still an excellent value.

Now, Sauza Blue Silver Tequila is as it sounds - a Silver or white or blanco tequila.  This means that it has not been aged or rested in wooden barrels like Reposado or Anejo tequila - it is simply the fermented liquor from the agave cactus, straight up.  Like most Tequila, this bad boy is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.  The beauty is that this liquor is deliciously smooth - it goes down very easily, and is suitable for both sipping or making into a cocktail - perhaps a Palermo or of course, the Margarita.

So now that Sauza has gotten on the ball and is now making 100% agave tequilas, well how IS it?  In a word: Excellent.  While I suffered Sauza Tequila in the pat, I know embrace it's new pure iteration.  The flavor of agave and citrus shines through in a very tasty fashion.  As far as tasting notes?  This Tequila is very straight forward.. agave, somewhat peppery, with a slight tang of some kind of citrus..  dare I say grapefruit?  It's rather subtle, but there is something there.  Beyond that, it's really difficult to say.  The agave flavor however is very present and savory.. the whole drink is almost silky.  Good stuff to be sure.

You'll see I recently reviewed the Espolon Tequila Blanco - this is very similar.  Indeed, I would expect most 100% agave blanco tequilas to be rather similar, and I'm not sure which one of them I like more.  They're both pretty damn good in their own way, I don't think you could go wrong with either of them.  Of course prices vary based on where you are in the world, but I believe that the Sauza might be a little bit less expensive than the Espolon.

All in all, this is a delicious tequila and a fantastic value for the money - it goes down smooth, tastes of delicious fresh agave, and represents the spirit well whether mixed up in a cocktail or sipped straight for pure savoring.  Don't hesitate - if you see this bottle in your local liquor store for around $25 or less with tax, snap it up, you won't be sorry that you did.
