Wild Turkey Rare Breed - Bourbon for life.

I finally got around to taking some pictures of the Wild Turkey Rare Breed.  Indeed, many pictures.  While many of them didn't make the cut, many did, and so they will be interspersed with my musings.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed.  A more refined version of an American Classic.

I've always been a fan of Whiskey, Whisky, and Bourbon Whiskey.  A liquor whose style America helped to shape and whose taste of corn, rye, and even barley warms one's heart and soul on the coldest of nights, while providing a good old fashioned kick on even the hottest of summer days.

While up in Oswego this year, we came across a fantastic liquor store on West 1st, and I was able to score a bottle of Rare Breed for an exceptional price - I think it came out to around $36 with tax, far cheaper than I would been able to purchase it for down here.  It's taken me this long to get around to writing about it due to the glut of wine that I purchased and the unfortunate scarcity of hours in the day to spend drinking.

Whiskey you say?  But what of all the delicious wine that you have?  It will get drank in due course, to be sure, and there will be pictures and delicious descriptions and musings galore.  But sometimes one wants a glass of wine.. sometimes one wants a nice cold beer..  and then some days, one just wants some bourbon in a snifter to sit and savor.  Each is good in it's own way, and as always, a time to every purpose under heaven.

Dare I say I'm making a ... stump speech for this Bourbon?  Ok that was awful, sorry.

I originally started drinking Wild Turkey many years ago in college, turned on to it by an acquaintance named Aaron.  It actually led me to try Old Grand Dad years later, but Wild Turkey was my first foray into higher-rye-mashbill Whiskeys.  While I initially enjoyed Wild Turkey and coke, I've since moved on to appreciate it's more nuanced flavors all by itself.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed is.. basically, a very tasty Wild Turkey - nothing more, nothing less.  I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, although it doesn't disappoint.  Flavors of corn, char, leather, vanilla, rye, caramel.. and something spicy hit you along with a slight alcoholic zip.  It's not quite as smooth as one would expect from this level of Bourbon; that being said, at over 54% alcohol by volume, it's much smoother than many lower proof alcoholic beverages would taste.

If you've never had Wild Turkey, you owe it to yourself to try it.  It's always been a bit rougher around the edges than some more "classy" or "refined" Whiskey - who cares?  I enjoy liquor for it's taste, not to broadcast some conspicuous consumption message of "Oh look at me, look at what brand I'm drinking."  Such silliness.  The value of anything lies in what it does for you and how you enjoy it, not what other people think of you for consuming it.

For some reason, Wild Turkey has gotten a reputation as a hillbilly or redneck drink - if that's the case, it speaks only to the good taste of hillbilly and redneck folk.  Don't buy into the negative stereotypes - try it for yourself and make up your own mind.  Austin Nichols knows what he's doing, and to denigrate a quality product by trying to associate it with a "lower class" of people not only does a disservice to them, it's disrespectful to the spirit itself!

Much like regular Wild Turkey, Rare Breed is heavy on the Rye and has a very strong char / oak flavor to it.  I personally find this enjoyable - other people prefer a heavier corn mash flavor, and I can't really fault them for that - heavier corn based whiskies are delicious, and Wild Turkey is not for everyone.  Wait, scratch that - Wild Turkey IS for everyone.  It's a delicious Whiskey with an exceptional taste and fragrance.  But this bottle of Rare Breed?  I think I'm going to keep this just for me and a couple of very close friends.  This is something special.

There isn't much to say about Rare Breed that hasn't been said elsewhere, so all I can tell you is find somebody who has a bottle and try it.  It's exceptional, and like regular Wild Turkey, quite a good value for the price.  I hope you've enjoyed my musings and the pictures that were taken.  The bottle could be more attractive, but as I stated earlier, who cares?  It's the juice inside the bottle that matters, not some packaging.
