Espolon Tequila Blanco - Tequila Review

Espolon Tequila Blanco, we meet again! I used to drink you many years ago when you were $35 to $40 a bottle - now you're $22. What has happened? What has changed? Apparently, very little!
Big smile and Espolon Tequila
It's been years since we've met Espolon - Welcome back home :)
Good day everyone. Today I am writing about a very tasty tequila that I enjoy - Espolon. Specifically, this is Espolon Blanco, which means white and unaged tequila.

Espolon Tequila Blanco is a premium tequila - that is to say, it's made from 100% pure Blue Agave cactus. If you dislike tequila as many people do or have only ever had cheap varieties like *shudder* Jose Cuervo, you owe it to yourself and your palette to try Espolon.

100% Pure Agave tequila is the only way to go!
A little background for those who aren't familiar with tequila: Tequila is a distilled alcohol beverage, around 80 proof, made from the Blue Agave cactus which grows in mexico. Specifically, only Blue Agave liquor produced around the city of Tequila in the Mexican state of Guadalajara, and the state of Jalisco, can legally be called tequila.  If blue Agave liquor is produced outside of these Mexican states, the product is called Mescal.  Mescal is delicious all by itself but generally tequila gets more 'face time' with the trendy drinking public.

The artwork on this bottle of Espolon Blanco is beautiful!
So here we have Espolon.  A lot of cheaper tequilas skimp - they might be merely 51% agave by volume, with the rest being made up of cheap fermenting garbage like sugar.  And example of this is Jose Cuervo Gold - 51% agave, artificial coloring, and 100% garbage.  Espolon is 100% blue Agave and the taste difference between it and a cheaper tequila is like night and day.

The bottle is attractive, but the tequila within is even better!

So what DOES it taste like you ask?  Well.. it tastes like agave cactus :)  But specifically, the agave flavor compared to many of these nice type tequilas is rather mild.. there are overtones of citrus, vanilla and spice.. maybe pepper?  It's hard to say.  It's also not that "hot" of a tequila - the alcohol burn is really toned down, not too offensive to be sure.

All in all this stuff is a premium tequila available for what I consider to be a very inexpensive price. It was around $22 which for a 100% blue agave tequila, is a steal!  If you have ANY inkling whatsoever that you'd like to try tequila OR if you're a solid tequila fan (like me) and you want to try something new and value priced - Espolon tequila is a must try.  I'd recommend it to anyone.

Espolon Blanco.  Yum!

The lady also now enjoys margaritas now that she's tried them with Espolon, which is a feat in and of itself :)  When comparing it to a margarita made with Patron Anejo, she identified the "Anejo" flavors, opining that "This is why is haven't liked margaritas in the past."  Or it could be that she just doesn't like Patron tequila, which I really can't fault her on - I don't think it's that good myself.

A quick margarita recipe:

1 oz Espolon Tequila Blanco
3/4 oz Cointreau (Don't use cheap Triple Sec - use the real deal.  You're using good tequila!)
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (NO ROSE'S LIME JUICE.  NOT NOW NOT EVER)
1/2 oz simple syrup

Spread some kosher salt on a plate, and rub the rim of your glass with some of the lime juice.
Place the rim of the glass in the salt until you have a nice coating all around.
Mix all ingredients, fill glass with ice, and pour them in.

Viola!  One delicious margarita :)  Careful, they go down easy and hit hard!

A bottle of Espolon and a smiling drinker thereof.  Delicious!

Try Espolon - it's delicious tequila at a very reasonable price.

  3. I couldn't agree with you more. Espolon is a fantastic tequila, especially at this price. I have a store I can get it for $18. I've tried $40-$50 bottles that I thought were garbage, but Espolon tastes great if you like the really sweet tasting tequila, which is my preference.
